Pope Leo Fires Back at Trump After Criticism… But Not the Way You’d Expect

The world is loud right now, and in the middle of all that noise, voices are clashing in ways that feel bigger than politics.

Pope Leo has responded after Donald Trump called him “weak” over his criticism of the war in Iran. But instead of firing back with the same energy, his response came from a completely different place.

Speaking on Monday, April 13, during a flight to Africa for a 10-day tour, the Chicago-born pope made it clear that he has no interest in turning it into a personal battle. He said he wouldn’t engage in a debate with Trump, but he also wouldn’t stay silent about what he believes.

According to him, the message of the Gospel is not something that should be twisted or used carelessly. And while others may choose to respond with politics, his focus remains on something deeper.

He didn’t hold back on one thing though: his stance on war.

Pope Leo explained that he isn’t afraid to speak openly, even if it means going against powerful voices. In his words, the Church doesn’t operate from a political angle, and his role isn’t to act like a politician. Instead, it’s about standing for peace, encouraging dialogue, and pushing for solutions that don’t involve violence.

And honestly, that hits differently when you think about everything happening in the world right now.

Because beyond the headlines, beyond the statements and counter-statements, there are real people suffering. Lives are being lost. Families are being broken. And his message circles back to something simple but powerful: there has to be a better way.

He emphasized that the core of his message, and that of the Church, is rooted in peace. Not performance. Not power. Just peace.

While Pope Leo has been vocal in recent weeks about the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, describing it as the “madness of war,” Trump didn’t hold back either. In a post on Truth Social, he described the pope as “weak” and criticized his stance on crime and foreign policy.

But maybe the bigger question isn’t who said what.

Maybe it’s this: in a world that keeps choosing conflict, who is actually choosing peace?
