Just days before a crucial quarter-final showdown, tension has reportedly hit the camp of the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria is scheduled to face Algeria on Saturday evening in the quarter-final of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, but preparations for the match have been thrown into uncertainty following reports that players and coaches have refused to travel.

According to Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco covering the tournament, the Super Eagles delegation declined to travel to Marrakech due to unpaid match bonuses. The situation is said to have frustrated the players, leading to a collective decision to halt movement and training until the matter is resolved.

Reports indicate that the bonuses owed date back to the four matches Nigeria has played so far in the competition. Under the guidance of Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles put together an impressive run to reach the quarter-finals, winning all three group-stage matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda before delivering a dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16.
Despite the strong performances on the pitch, the unresolved financial commitments appear to have created a standoff between the players and football authorities. Sources suggest that the team has made it clear they will not resume training or travel for the Algeria fixture until assurances are given and payments are made.
The development has sparked concern among fans, especially considering the importance of the quarter-final clash. Algeria is widely regarded as one of the tournament’s toughest sides, and any disruption to Nigeria’s preparation could have a significant impact on the outcome of the match.
This is not the first time issues surrounding unpaid bonuses have surfaced in Nigerian football, and the latest incident has once again reignited conversations around player welfare, administrative responsibility, and how off-field problems can derail on-field success.
As of now, all eyes are on the authorities to see how quickly the situation can be resolved, with supporters hoping the Super Eagles can refocus and continue their impressive AFCON 2025 campaign without further distractions.
