The Dialogue of a Low Mood: Learning Not to Believe Every Thought

Low moods whisper lies, turning setbacks into verdicts. But when Daniel pauses to ask the right questions, he discovers the truth: his story isn’t over, it’s just waiting for him to see it clearly again

There are days when our thoughts become our harshest critics. A single setback suddenly feels like proof that nothing will ever work out. In those moments, it’s easy to mistake a passing feeling for the whole truth.

If you’ve ever found yourself there, this conversation is for you.

Daniel: I don’t know, man. Nothing in my life is working. Every plan I try just collapses. Maybe I’m just not good enough.

Mentor: Listen carefully, Daniel. That’s not the truth speaking; that’s your mood. When you’re low, your mind plays tricks. It takes today’s setback and promotes it to a final verdict: “This will never work.” But that’s not reality. It’s just a feeling pretending to be fact.

Daniel: But it feels so real. Like my past, my present, even my future are all failures lined up waiting for me.

Mentor: I know it feels that way. But that’s the trap. A low mood judges things it has no business judging. It filters everything through pain and convinces you it’s showing you the truth. But it’s not. It’s blinding you to what’s actually working, the progress you’ve made, the strengths you carry, and the victories you’ve already won.

Daniel: So how do I fight back? How do I stop believing the lie?

Mentor: Start by asking yourself two questions, Daniel. First: Is this actually true, or am I just in a low mood right now? Second: What am I forgetting that’s actually going right? Most times, those answers will contradict the despair you feel.

Daniel: It’s hard to think that way when everything feels so heavy.

Mentor: I understand. But remember, feelings are real, even when they aren’t always reliable. Give yourself time before making permanent conclusions from temporary emotions.

Daniel: So… the future isn’t closed?

Mentor: Exactly. What you haven’t achieved yet, you still can. What hasn’t come through yet, it still might. Nothing is sealed. But before chasing tomorrow, you must find peace with today. Because if you can’t feel enough now, even success later will feel empty.

Daniel: (Pauses, then smiles faintly.) I see it now. My story isn’t over. It’s just waiting for me to see it clearly again.

Mentor: That’s it. Hold onto that truth. The lie loses its power the moment you recognize it. Your mood may speak loudly, but it doesn’t get the final word.

A Final Thought

Not every thought deserves your trust. Sometimes, the loudest voice in your mind is simply your lowest mood speaking.

Be gentle with yourself on difficult days. Rest if you need to. Reach out if you can. And before you decide what your future looks like, give yourself the chance to see it through clearer eyes.

Your story is still being written.
